Sport Section

Classes in all subjects taught at the school except Physical and Sports Education and swimming.

This section is reserved for pupils nominated by clubs or federations due to intensive training, i.e. at least 8 hours per week.

A request including a letter from the parents and a letter from the coach should be sent to the Director of Education, Youth and Sport before 15 June.

If admission to the sport section is approved, the pupil will be given a timetable that will allow him or her to leave school at 3.40 pm wherever possible.

Conditions for approval:

  • Intensive training in a sport --> 8+ hours per week
  • Joint request sent by club and family to the Department of Education, Youth and Sport before 15 June

Music Section

Classes in all subjects taught at the school except visual arts, music, technology and an additional modern language.

Pupils in 7° (Year 6) are offered specialist music programmes from the time they start in 6° (Year 7) at Collège Charles III.

This section is reserved for pupils studying music recommended by the Director of the Prince Rainier III Music Academy.

The programme of study allows pupils to take music lessons at the Academy.

The timetable for pupils in the music section is organised according to the following principles:

  • On 2 half-days (Tuesdays and Thursdays), the timetable is designed to allow pupils to take their lessons at the Academy
  • There is also an opportunity for pupils studying at the Academy to take English+ lessons as long as they meet the criteria for admission to this section

Conditions for approval:

Approval from the Director of the Rainier III Music Academy.

English+/European Section

Classes in all subjects taught at the school except visual arts, music and technology.

This section is reserved for pupils who are not bilingual. It offers double the number of hours of English teaching than in the traditional programme and enables pupils to study English as a tool for communication. Traditional, whole-class teaching is conducted entirely in English and reinforced by conversation classes in small groups with an English assistant, work in the language laboratory and a variety of activities designed to deepen language knowledge.

International Section

Classes in all subjects taught at the school except visual arts, music and technology.

The International Section continues at Lycée Albert I, preparing students for the International Option Baccalaureate. It is important to note that the examination is as highly recognised in France, notable by the "Grandes Écoles", as it is by British and American universities.

Although it is in keeping with the objectives of the national curriculum, teaching in the International Section remains deeply rooted in an Anglo-American approach to education, promoting openness to another culture.

Conditions for approval:

  • Have completed intensive English lessons at primary level and/or be bilingual with a good level of both English and French
  • Approval of primary school teacher achievement
  • Approval of English teacher
  • Pass in English test

6° (Year 7) option: additional modern language

As a result of a Department of Education, Youth and Sport initiative, Collège Charles III offers pupils in 6° (Year 7) the opportunity to take up an additional modern language, with a choice of German, Chinese, Spanish, Italian or Russian. This policy means that English is mandatory as a first modern language for all 6° (Year 7) pupils, without exception.

All pupils entering 6° may choose to take up an additional modern language, with the exception of those in the music section or special educational needs section. The classes take up two hours per week in addition to the standard timetable, which is not modified.

In 5° (Year 8), pupils who have studied an additional modern language for one year may continue it as their second modern language, or give it up and choose a different second modern language.
