The year 2024 marked the twenty-third anniversary of the European Day of Languages. Indeed, since 2001, forty-seven European states participate each year in this event!
All the teachers of living language at Collège Charles III as well as the students of 6th grade who chose to follow an initiation to LV1 Bis and 5th LV2 have, again this year, wanted to take part in the cultural event. China and Russia have joined Europe once again to join forces!
This moment was first the opportunity to recall the notions discussed in primary and to highlight subsequently the "Art of living together", a savoir-faire from which emerged a society seen through the prism of its cohesion and openness, a society in a single world whose presence is expressed in terms of identities, contact between cultures and interdependence.
The students themselves talked about what is being done in Europe on this day:
- We celebrate the difference of each language,
- We show the specificities of our language,
- Encouraging the teaching of women,
- We organize events, radio and television programs, language courses, conferences...
and what it means to them to “speak another language”:
- Go to someone who expresses himself differently,
- To put yourself at his reach,
- Remove obstacles and fears,
- Open up to other cultures, other ways of expressing...
Many posters - a word from the language studied, the name of the country, greetings, known specialties, a symbolic monument or small ritual phrase - were made by the students and we are happy to share this multilingual mosaic on our College website. What did we learn from this new awareness? Simply the fact that, the more we know languages, the more we appropriate the culture of others, the richer we become personally! Paul VALÉRY (1871-1945) said «Let us enrich ourselves with our mutual differences» and he was right! The more we know about different things than our own, the more these differences belong to us and the more we enrich ourselves personally.
On this day, all the teachers of living language at Charles III College, They wanted to congratulate their students for choosing to take an initiation into a new language from the sixth grade and encouraged them to encourage everyone to adopt the same approach as them in order to work for a better world !
