Berlin and World War II
After a Nice-Berlin flight, the students were able to discover the German federal capital on foot, accompanied by their guide Wolker. The opportunity to delve into German history and in particular the reconstruction of Germany after the Second World War. They also silently walked past the Holocaust memorial markers.
In order to immerse themselves in the daily life and popular culture of the former East Germany, the schoolchildren visited the DDR museum, then saw the Berlin Cathedral and its surroundings (construction from 1894 to 1905). The most daring climbed the 270 or so steps to then enjoy a beautiful view of Berlin.
Their view was even more impressive from the top of the emblematic television tower (built under the GDR), the tallest building in Europe, open to the public (368 meters high).
Their journey also took them to the Stasi prisons and to the museum of German resistance against the Nazi regime. Their guide told them in particular how Georg Elser, a carpenter who acted alone, tried to assassinate Hitler during his famous annual speech on November 8. Failed assassination because the Furer had to leave the room 20 minutes before the scheduled bomb time. Then, they discovered the story of the German officer Stauffenberg who, as time passed, the less he accepted the ideology of his country. He therefore decided on July 20, 1944 to assassinate Hitler. But the bomb he had planted did not reach Hitler who, once again, survived.
Finally, the traces of History led them to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp museum and the Charly checkpoint.
The trip ended on a colorful note through street art on the former Berlin Wall.
A moving, historic and above all unforgettable journey !
